Samsung has launched Galaxy XR, a headset designed to showcase the capabilities of Android XR, a new platform built for extended reality. Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, Galaxy XR integrates multimodal AI to support natural interactions through voice, vision and gesture. The device marks Samsung’s entry into a broader XR ecosystem, with future plans including AI glasses and enterprise applications. With Gemini AI embedded at the system level, Galaxy XR aims to offer intuitive, human-like responses in immersive environments.

Multimodal AI at the Core

Galaxy XR is the first device to feature Gemini AI natively within the Android XR platform. This integration allows the headset to interpret surroundings and respond in conversational ways, enhancing user interaction. Unlike traditional tools, Galaxy XR functions more like a digital companion, supporting tasks through contextual awareness. Its multimodal capabilities enable seamless control via speech, gestures and visual cues.

Samsung, Google and Qualcomm have built Android XR to support a wide range of devices, from headsets to AI glasses. Galaxy XR benefits from this open architecture, allowing Android apps to run natively and supporting standards like OpenXR, WebXR and Unity. Developers can easily adapt existing experiences for the platform, expanding the reach of XR applications. This approach ensures compatibility and flexibility across consumer and enterprise use cases.

Designed for Comfort and Utility

The Galaxy XR headset features a lightweight, ergonomic design optimized for extended wear. Pressure is evenly distributed across the head, and the battery pack is external to reduce weight. A detachable light shield enhances immersion by blocking ambient light when needed. These design choices prioritize user comfort while maintaining durability for daily use.

Galaxy XR supports a variety of XR-optimized applications, including Google Maps, YouTube and Google Photos. Users can navigate immersive 3D maps with Gemini’s guidance, search content with gestures, and convert 2D media into spatial 3D experiences. Advanced sensors and microphones enable precise tracking and clear voice input, enhancing both virtual and real-world interactions.

Entertainment features include a 4K Micro-OLED display for streaming, multi-angle sports viewing, and AI-assisted gaming. Adobe’s Project Pulsar allows users to edit videos in 3D, adding depth and layering elements behind subjects. Powered by Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 and the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, Galaxy XR delivers high-performance visuals and sound, with up to 2.5 hours of battery life per session.

Samsung is also targeting industrial applications, partnering with Samsung Heavy Industries for virtual shipbuilding training. Collaboration with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces platform supports enterprise developers in creating XR solutions for training, design and remote collaboration. These efforts position Galaxy XR as a versatile tool for both consumer and professional environments.

A Glimpse into Future Form Factors

Beyond headsets, Samsung is developing AI glasses in partnership with Google and lifestyle brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These devices aim to combine XR functionality with fashion-forward design, offering practical and stylish alternatives for daily use. Seamless integration with Android XR ensures consistent experiences across form factors, reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to boundary-free discovery, work and play.

Samsung’s collaboration with Gentle Monster reflects a growing trend of merging wearable tech with high-end fashion. Gentle Monster previously partnered with Huawei and has a reputation for avant-garde eyewear, suggesting that Samsung’s AI glasses may appeal to design-conscious consumers as much as tech enthusiasts.
