ABB Introduces Industrial Drive with Cybersecurity Focus

- ABB’s new drive features dual built-in Ethernet ports that support selectable industrial protocols, including Profinet IO RT, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus TCP/IP.
- The ACS380-E is equipped with integrated cybersecurity functions that help machine builders comply with the EU’s new machinery directive coming into effect in 2027.
- The drive enables fast USB-C “cold commissioning” and firmware updates without the need for an external power supply or optional cards.
Connectivity Without Complexity
ABB has launched the ACS380-E, a new industrial drive designed to streamline machine integration while addressing evolving connectivity and security needs. The device includes two built-in Ethernet ports supporting standard industrial protocols such as Profinet IO RT, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus TCP/IP. These ports are part of the base configuration, eliminating the need for additional modules and reducing installation time. By simplifying network integration, the drive aims to support a wide range of automation environments.
The ACS380-E is tailored for industrial machinery and supports fast commissioning, wiring, and assembly. Its USB-C interface enables “cold commissioning” and firmware updates without external power or optional cards. This feature helps maintain up-to-date configurations, especially in security-sensitive applications. Ethernet-based firmware access further enhances deployment efficiency.
Security Features Aligned with EU Regulations
Cybersecurity is a central element of the ACS380-E’s design. Integrated protection mechanisms help manufacturers comply with the European Union’s upcoming machinery directive, set to take effect in 2027. These features are intended to support long-term regulatory alignment without requiring retrofitting or external security modules. ABB positions the drive as a forward-compatible solution for increasingly digitized industrial operations.
According to product manager Prabhu Nagavi, modern industrial environments demand equipment that combines connectivity, simplicity, and security. The ACS380-E is built to meet current standards while remaining adaptable to future requirements. Its architecture reflects the growing emphasis on secure-by-design principles in automation hardware. By embedding these capabilities, ABB aims to reduce the burden on machine builders navigating complex compliance landscapes.
Performance and Integration Capabilities
Starting in 2026, the ACS380-E will support all common rotating motor types across global voltage ranges from 100 to 600 V. It is optimized for applications such as packaging systems, conveyors, extrusion lines, and multi-axis machines. The drive integrates seamlessly with major automation platforms, including ABB’s own AC500 PLC and third-party systems. Its compact form factor and flexible mounting options make it suitable for space-constrained installations.
The ACS380-E is compatible with ABB’s Drive Composer software, including the latest Drive Composer 3 version. This integration enables enhanced monitoring, adaptive programming tools, and fast offline configuration. These features contribute to reduced setup times and improved operational transparency. The software support also facilitates diagnostics and long-term maintenance planning.
