Stardock Entertainment has announced Elemental: Reforged, a definitive remastering of its ambitious fantasy 4X strategy series. The game integrates core elements from Elemental: War of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, and Sorcerer King. This release aims to finally bring to life the comprehensive vision initially conceived nearly two decades ago. The developers faced technical limitations in prior attempts, particularly 32-bit memory constraints. Now, with a modernized 64-bit engine, Elemental: Reforged seeks to deliver on that ambitious original design.
Evolution of a Vision
The concept for Elemental emerged in 2008, following Stardock’s success with titles like Galactic Civilizations II. It was envisioned as a comprehensive fantasy civilization strategy experience. However, the initial release, Elemental: War of Magic (2010), faced significant technical issues at launch due to design ambition exceeding technical capabilities. Stardock subsequently released Elemental: Fallen Enchantress and Sorcerer King, both of which improved upon the original foundation. Nevertheless, neither fully captured the complete scope of the initial design due to persistent technology constraints.
Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock Entertainment and lead designer of the original Elemental game, commented on the journey. He explained how the original design proved too expansive for a 32-bit environment. Subsequent iterations were shadows of the grand vision, even as they improved on mechanics. Now, the 64-bit engine allows them to develop the full game as initially imagined in 2008.
Key Enhancements
Elemental: Reforged will combine features and mechanics from its predecessors with entirely new content. It runs on a new 64-bit engine with enhanced visuals, promising a more robust experience. Wardell highlighted the game’s unique blend of strategy and RPG elements, emphasizing player agency. Players can create their own characters and factions, shaping their experience within the world.
The game boasts a unified Elemental experience, bringing together strategic depth, intelligent AI, and rich gameplay from Fallen Enchantress. It incorporates the immersive crafting and quest systems from Sorcerer King, alongside dynasty-building, terraforming, and innovative mechanics from War of Magic. Players can expect endless replayability through procedurally generated fantasy worlds, filled with lore-rich quests and evolving environments.
Modern Features
Elemental: Reforged focuses on RPG-infused unit design, allowing players to customize heroes and armies. Each unit can be crafted with unique histories, stats, equipment, and abilities, growing stronger with experience. The game features compelling tactical combat, rewarding strategic thinking. Players can also utilize a sophisticated auto-resolve system powered by advanced AI for streamlined empire management.
Deep quest and story integration ensures narrative-driven quests are seamlessly woven into the empire-building experience. These quests influence diplomacy, unlock secrets, and offer meaningful rewards. The game also includes a modernized UI and graphics engine, leveraging DirectX 11 for enhanced visuals and seamless zooming. Integrated modding tools, including a comprehensive built-in editor and Steam Workshop integration, will support community content. Elemental: Reforged is now available to wishlist on Steam.
