Mobile App to fight Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s Association Unveils “My ALZ Journey” App to Empower Newly Diagnosed Individuals and Care Partners.

The Alzheimer’s Association has launched My ALZ Journey, a free mobile application designed to support individuals newly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, along with their care partners. This initiative aims to provide personalized guidance, educational resources, planning tools, and connections to local community support, all accessible via a user-friendly platform.

“A dementia diagnosis can be overwhelming and isolating,” stated Elizabeth Edgerly, Senior Director of Community Programs and Services at the Alzheimer’s Association. “My ALZ Journey offers trusted, easy-to-access guidance that helps individuals and families in the early stages of the disease feel supported and confident about what comes next.”

Key Features of My ALZ Journey:

  • Personalized Guidance: Tailored content based on the user’s role (individual living with dementia or care partner), age at diagnosis, and location.
  • Educational Resources: Access to a comprehensive library of information on Alzheimer’s, caregiving, and future planning.
  • Community Connection: Direct links to local Alzheimer’s Association chapters, support groups, events, and programs.
  • Interactive Tools: Engaging activities and planning resources to assist users in staying informed and connected.

The development of My ALZ Journey was significantly influenced by individuals living with dementia, including members of the Alzheimer’s Association National Early Stage Advisory Group (ESAG). Their insights ensured the app addresses real-life needs and challenges faced after a diagnosis.

“Technology can be challenging for someone living with dementia, but I find the My ALZ Journey app easy to use,” shared Brent Beasley, a current ESAG member diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s in 2023. “Having people living with dementia provide input and feedback into the app’s development helps make it practical and responsive to the real-life needs of diagnosed individuals and their care partners.”

Additional Insight

In a related development, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the first blood test for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease. This advancement represents a significant step forward in early detection and could complement tools like My ALZ Journey by facilitating timely diagnosis and intervention.
