Nioh 3
  • Team NINJA’s samurai action RPG returns with time-traveling conflict, historical characters, and expanded exploration across feudal Japan.

KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Team NINJA have officially announced the release date for Nioh 3, the latest entry in their dark samurai action RPG series. The game will launch on February 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam. To mark the start of pre-orders, the studio released a cinematic story trailer directed by Shinji Higuchi, offering a glimpse into the game’s narrative and mechanics. This installment builds on the franchise’s established themes while introducing new historical settings and characters.

A Fractured Dynasty and Supernatural Conflict

Players will assume the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo, a young noble preparing to become shogun during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period. His younger brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, driven by envy, seeks to overthrow him using a yokai army empowered by a mysterious force. The resulting chaos plunges the nation into turmoil, forcing Takechiyo to rely on his guardian spirit, Kusanagi, to travel through time and restore order. The story spans multiple eras and regions, including Edo Castle, Tōtōmi province, and Heian-era Kyoto, each rendered with distinct visual detail.

Throughout the journey, players will encounter legendary figures such as Takeda Shingen, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Minamoto no Yoritomo. Other notable characters include Hattori Hanzo, Honda Tadakatsu, and Saito Fuku, adding depth to the game’s historical tapestry. Voice talent includes Tao Tsuchiya as Himiko, the enigmatic queen of Yamatai-koku, and Kanata Hongo as the antagonist Kunimatsu. Gameplay features open-area exploration, yokai battles, and the Crucible challenge mode, offering varied combat and narrative experiences.

Editions, Bonuses, and Localization

Nioh 3 will be available in multiple formats, including a standard edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition, and a SteelBook version with two exclusive DLCs. A Season Pass will also be sold separately, providing access to future content expansions. Early purchase bonuses will be redeemable through the PlayStation Store and Steam, though these will be time-limited after launch. The game supports both Japanese and English voice tracks, with subtitles available in five languages: English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

Time Travel as a Gameplay Mechanic

Unlike previous entries, Nioh 3 introduces time travel as a central narrative and gameplay element. This allows players to explore different historical periods and interact with characters across centuries, adding complexity to both story and level design. The mechanic may also influence combat strategy, as players adapt to changing environments and enemy types. Team NINJA’s approach suggests a broader ambition for the series, blending historical fiction with supernatural themes in a more dynamic framework.
