Officials cited media reports describing a teenager who shared a suicide plan with an AI system. They said such incidents highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in AI development.

The attorneys general called on companies to permit independent audits of their AI products. They also urged that state and federal regulators be granted access to review how these systems operate. Microsoft and Google declined to comment on the letter, while Meta and Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters. The concerns reflect growing unease about the rapid deployment of generative AI tools without clear safeguards.

Regulatory Tensions Between States and Washington

The warning comes amid a broader dispute over who should regulate artificial intelligence. State officials argue that they must retain the authority to protect residents from harmful or deceptive technologies. The Trump administration, however, is seeking to prevent states from passing their own AI laws. This proposal has triggered bipartisan resistance from attorneys general across the country.

Dozens of state leaders have urged congressional lawmakers to reject any federal ban on state‑level AI regulation. They contend that local oversight is essential to address emerging risks quickly. State attorneys general say companies must ensure their products do not exacerbate mental health vulnerabilities. They also emphasize that transparency is essential for building public trust in AI technologies.
