Synology has released version 1.1 of its ActiveProtect Manager (APM), adding new capabilities aimed at improving cyber resilience and regulatory compliance for enterprise users. The update includes enhanced network controls, expanded backup deployment options, and broader support for remote storage platforms. These additions are designed to help organizations manage growing cybersecurity risks while maintaining operational efficiency. As IT budgets tighten, integrated solutions like ActiveProtect are gaining traction for their scalability and cost-effectiveness.

Expanded Security and Compliance Features

One of the key enhancements in APM 1.1 is the introduction of Allow Access Mode, which restricts inbound traffic during backup operations to whitelisted IP addresses. Once the backup process concludes—or finishes early—the system automatically switches to full isolation mode to minimize exposure. This feature provides an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access during critical data operations. Synology also added support for multi-site, multi-geo backups, helping organizations meet data residency requirements across jurisdictions.

These compliance-focused improvements reflect increasing demand for geographically aware backup strategies. Enterprises operating in regulated sectors must often store data within specific regions to meet legal obligations. APM 1.1 enables administrators to configure backup workflows that align with these constraints. By centralizing control, the platform simplifies oversight and reduces the risk of non-compliance.

Deployment and Storage Flexibility

The update introduces mass deployment capabilities for Proxmox environments, allowing IT teams to install backup agents across multiple systems simultaneously. This streamlines setup in large-scale infrastructures and reduces manual configuration time. ActiveProtect now supports data tiering, enabling automatic movement of archived data to long-term storage destinations. Organizations can choose between on-premises options like Synology SA and HD Series or cloud platforms such as Amazon S3 and C2 Object Storage.

With APM 1.1, compatibility has been extended to include Wasabi cloud storage and select XS/XS+ model devices. This broader support gives enterprises more flexibility in designing hybrid backup architectures. As storage needs evolve, tiering and remote access features help balance performance with cost. These capabilities are particularly useful for businesses managing large volumes of data across distributed environments.

Market Reception and Strategic Outlook

ActiveProtect has already secured a strong foothold in the enterprise backup space, protecting over 30 million workloads globally. According to Gartner Peer Insights, the solution holds a 4.9/5 rating and a 99% customer recommendation score as of August 2025. Synology was also named a Representative Vendor in Gartner’s 2025 Market Guide for Enterprise Backup Storage Appliances. These recognitions underscore the platform’s reliability and relevance in a competitive market.

The latest update builds on this foundation by addressing emerging challenges in cybersecurity and data governance. As threats become more sophisticated, enterprises are seeking backup solutions that combine security, compliance, and operational agility. Synology’s integrated approach aims to reduce total cost of ownership while delivering robust protection. Continued development of ActiveProtect suggests a long-term commitment to supporting enterprise resilience.

The WORM (Write Once Read Many) feature in ActiveProtect ensures that backup data cannot be altered after creation, a capability often required in financial and legal sectors. Combined with air-gapped backups and self-healing integrity checks, this makes the platform suitable for environments where data immutability and recovery assurance are critical.
